3G (3rd Generation) is a set of standards for mobile telecommunications, specially designed to include wide-area wireless voice telephone, video calls, and wireless data, all in a mobile environment. An administrator is an authorised user with full access to the MyNetFone MyAccount portal to make all moves and changes to your Virtual PBX account - change settings, set up new users and configure all other stations and numbers.

ADSL (Asymetrical Digital Subscriber Line) is a high-speed internet access service that uses existing copper telephones lines to send and receive data at speeds that are faster than ‘dial-up’ internet.

The Asymmetrical refers to the fact that the upload and download speeds are not the same, with the upload speed often slower than the download speed.

ADSL2+ is a faster version of an ADSL internet connection.


ATA (Analog Telephone Adaptor) is a technical term for the device used to connect your existing phone handset to the internet to make VoIP calls. When you use an ATA, your VoIP phone service will always be on, independent of whether your computer is on or not.

Auto-Attendant is a phone service feature that uses an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) menu to give the caller options for the call to be transferred to any specific area of interest. For example, the user can set-up the auto-attendant to say “Welcome to [company name], please press ‘1’ for Sales, ‘2’ for Supports… etc”.

When used with the MyNetFone Virtual PBX service, Auto-Attendant recognises the Direct-in-Dial number the caller has dialled, so the user can program different IVR for different phone numbers, so each office or business division can have a different Auto-Attendant. Find out more.


Bandwidth a synonym for data transfer rate - the amount of data that can be carried from one point to another in a given time period (usually a second). It is usually expressed in bits or multiples of bits (kbits, Mbits etc). The higher the bandwidth, the faster a user could browse the Internet. The faster you could browse the Internet, the more data quota will be consumed.

ADSL service can be delivered from 256kbit/s up to 8Mbit/s, while ADSL2+ service is capable of reaching up to 24Mbit/s. Find out more.

Broadband is a type of internet connection which uses a wide range of the unused frequencies of a telephone line to carry data. Since different frequencies are used for surfing the internet and making phone calls, you can do both at the same time. In contrast, a Dialup service uses the voice frequencies of a telephone line, so you can only make calls or surf the internet, but not both at once. Find out more.

Browser (short for Web browser) is a software application used to locate and display Web pages. Most browsers can display text, as well as graphics and multimedia information, including sound and video, though they require plug-ins for some multimedia formats.

Churning (or Rapid Transfer) allows you to switch from one internet provider to another with minimal downtime (sometimes as little as one hour). Only Internet Service Providers that use the same broadband infrastructure can ‘churn’ connections between each other. Users switching between providers which use different infrastructure have to go through the longer disconnection/reconnection process.

CLI (Calling Line Identification) Overstamping allows you to set a preferred phone number (such as your main company phone number or existing landline number) to appear as the Caller ID on calls you make from any extension or line of your MyNetFone service. This useful when you want call recipients to easily recognise your phone number and answer your call. Additionally, it is handy for residential customers who do not have a Direct In-Dial number on their VoIP service – they can set their landline to appear in Caller ID instead, so people can return their calls directly to their landline. Codec (Coder-Decoder) is a computer program used to convert analog voice signals into digital voice signals, which can then be sent over the internet. A codec with a higher bandwidth requirements provides better voice quality, but also uses more data.

Coverage refers to the geographic area where a mobile phone, broadband or wireless broadband service provider can deliver their service. MyNetFone Coverage Checker is an online tool that lets you check whether Naked ADSL2+ is available in your area.


Data is information which is converted into binary digital form, and stored in electronic memory as bits and bytes in. The conversion of information into data makes it more convenient to move or process. Data Boost is a feature of the MyNetFone service which provides additional internet data quota which can be bought by Naked ADSL2+ customers. For example, when a Residential Naked ADSL2+ plan customer uses up their monthly quota and their internet speed is shaped (slowed), they can purchase a Data Boost to get additional quota at fast ADSL2+ speeds. A Device is a piece of equipment that is required to connect to the MyNetFone service. Depending on what type of service you require, you may need a device such as a VoIP adaptor, router, modem etc. MyNetFone has wide range of competitively priced devices which will connect you to our Phone or Internet services – simply see the ‘get started’ section of the service you are interested in to find out the device options. Dialup is a narrowband internet service, which uses your voice landline to carry data across network. It is limited to using the low-end voice frequency, so the normal achievable line speed only up to 56kbps, and the user can only surf the internet or use the phone – not both at the same time. In contrast, broadband internet can reach speeds of up to 24Mbps (over 400 times faster that Dialup) and be used at the same time as making phone calls.

DID (Direct in-Dial) number is a telephone number that can be reached from any telephone in Australia or the world. VoIP users that have a DID can receive incoming calls and make outgoing calls. Some VoIP service providers do not provide DIDs, so their customers can only make outgoing phone calls over VoIP – this is called a "one-way" service. MyNetFone provides included DIDs with most of our plans (and you can lease one if it is not included with your chosen plan), so your friends and family can call you on your VoIP service, even if they are not using VoIP.

A diversion is how a station is set up to send all incoming calls to another number, be it a station or an external number such as a mobile or landline.

Download is a process of data transfer from the World Wide Web to your computer. The opposite data transfer (from your computer to the World Wide Web) is called Upload. Most internet services are asymmetric, which means the download speed is higher than the upload speed. Find out more.


DSL stands for ‘Digital Subscriber Line’, and it provides digital data transmission over the wires of a local telephone network. The most widely adopted DSL technologies are ADSL or ADSL2+ (which stand for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). Find out more.


An extension number is a 4-Digit code that allows any other Virtual PBX user (on the same account) to call you on or transfer a call to.


Fax-Over-3G allows you to use your mobile 3G wireless network to send fax. It is ideal for regional areas with no landline coverage, which have access to the 3G network. Follow Me is a MyNetFone service feature that allows users to re-direct their incoming calls to ring multiple destination numbers, or to leave voicemail. For example, a customer can set incoming calls to their MyNetFone number to be redirected to their work phone, then mobile, then voicemail.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Server allows you to share files by acting as a host, letting multiple clients to download from a single point of origin. To use an FTP server effectively, a fixed network path is required, which means a Static (Fixed) IP Address. MyNetFone Naked ADSL2+ provides a Static  IP Address on all our Naked ADSL2+ plans.

FXS (Foreign eXchange Station) and FXO (Foreign eXchange Office) are the names of the two most common interfaces (ports or plugs) found in analog telephony environments.

FXS interface (the plug on the wall or an ATA device) delivers service from the phone provider and must be connected to customer’s equipment (telephones, modems, and fax machines). FXO (the plug on the phone) receives the phone service. Therefore a telecommunications line from an FXO port must connect to an FXS port in order for the connection to work.

Global Access is a MyNetFone service which our customers can use to make calls at great-value MyNetFone call-rates without any VoIP-enabled equipment or a VoIP phone system installed. To use the service, customers simply dial into their local Global Access Point from a pre-registered telephone number (this may incur a local call cost) and then enter their destination number – the rest of the call goes over the MyNetFone network and the customer gets the advantage of our low call-rates. Gold Numbers allow business customers to choose up to the last 4 digits of their DID number (so it spells out a word or is easier to remember). Gold Numbers are available upon request for a once-off fee. Find out more.


Select which extensions will ring when a call is received. You can have lines ring several phones simultaneously or ring (or hunt) different pre-set lines sequentially until the call is picked up.


Set a number to ring all your Sales staff simultaneously, so the call can be answered quickly.

Alternatively, set the Hunt Group to sequential, so the call goes to each sales person in turn, until one picks up.

ISDN stands for Integrated Services Digital Network. There are 2 types of ISDN service: BRI (Basic Rate Interface) and PRI (Primary Rate Interface). BRI/PRI connections are usually expensive, and growing businesses that need additional phone lines can be limited in their expansion due to these costs. A line refers to an active telephone call or the amount of active telephone calls you can have at any one time. 

Example: If you're on a Virtual PBX 8 line service, this would mean you have 8 lines or the capability to handle 8 concurrent telephone calls.


Modem is a device that modulates an analog carrier signal to encode digital information and demodulates the carrier signal to decode the transmitted message. Unlike a router, a modem is acts just like a translator of analog signals to digital information and back, while a router is used for forwarding pure digital information, usually within defined networks. PBX (Private Branch eXchange) is a telephone exchange that serves a particular business or office, and is connected to the public network using phone lines or trunks. A PBX can provide advanced call-handling features such as call-forwarding, call groups, hunt groups, voicemail and more, though PBX installers usually charge extra for all but the most basic features.

MyNetFone provides two services that can help businesses get advanced features while savings on maintenance and call costs: Virtual PBX which delivers PBX-style functionality over the internet, which any bulky equipment on your business premises, or SIP Trunking service which is used with your IP-enabled PBX.

Peak time refers to the time of day when network traffic is at the highest point, and usually occurs during business hours. For Residential Naked ADSL2+ plans, MyNetFone peak time is between 10am to 12am (midnight). The rest of the day is called ‘Off Peak’ time. For Business Naked ADSL2+ plans, MyNetFone does not have a peak-time, and customers can use their quota anytime.

A phone or telephone is a telecommunications device which is used to transmit and receive sound (most commonly voice and speech) across distances. PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) refers to the global telephone network which allows people to call each other by dialling a unique telephone number. Quality of Service (QoS) is an industry-wide set of standards and mechanisms for ensuring high-quality performance for critical applications (such as VoIP). Quota is the data usage allowance included in MyNetFone Naked ADSL2+ plans. For Residential plans, the overall quota is divided into Peak and Off-Peak time quotas. For Business plans, the quota can be used anytime.

Shared Access Numbers is a MyNetFone VoIP feature that gives callers the ability to call our MyNetFone customers for the cost of a local call. SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is a standard for making and receiving phone calls over the internet. SIP has become the most popular standard for VoIP globally because it is easy to work with and works well with most networks. All good service providers and equipment vendors support SIP, and customers should check their equipment for SIP compatibility before purchase. Soft keys refer to the physical buttons located on the upper right hand side of your handset. Soft keys allow you to juggle calls, make and/or receive another calls, etc.

A softphone is a software program for making telephone calls over the internet from your computer. To use a softphone, you just need a headset and any MyNetFone VoIP plan. Once you sign up, you will be given a phone number and registration details that need to be entered into the softphone configuration, then you can start making phone calls. Find out more.

Speed shaping is reduces a customer’s download speed when they exceed their monthly download quota. MyNetFone applies speed shaping only to our Residential Naked ADSL2+ plans, where speed is slowed to 64kbp when quota is exceeded. The benefit of speed shaping is that customers do not get unexpected excess download charges. However, if the customer needs fast internet speed, they can purchase a Data Boost for extra download quota at fast ADSL2+ speeds.

A Static IP is a fixed Internet Protocol address. A Static IP address is useful if you’re running a network server (such as FTP or email server) that requires a static network route. MyNetFone provides Static IP addresses with all our Naked ADSL2+ plans. Find out more.

A station refers to a device connected to your Virtual PBX that is capable of making or receiving telephone calls (eg. a handset, a soft client running on a PC or MAC, a smartphone, conference phone, etc).


Teleconferencing links any number of telephone calls from different locations into the one call. MyNetFone's teleconferencing facility is called 'Meet-me conferencing' and this service makes it easy to share information and bring a customer's organisation, suppliers or clients together, without having to spend time and capital on travel. Upload is a process where data is transferred from your computer to the World Wide Web. The opposite direction data transfer is called Download. Some internet providers count both uploads and downloads towards their customers’ monthly download quotas, which means quotas are reached much faster. A user is a person who has been granted access to the MyAccount Portal. Users are limited to being able to change the settings pertaining only to their allocated station or user account (eg. contact name, number, email, etc).


Virtual Fax is a service offered by MyNetFone that sets up one of your telephone numbers to receive faxes and sends them directly to your email as an attachment. Find out more
